Alumnus served as team physician at 2022 Winter Olympics

Dr. Paul Infield (BS ‘09) is a chiropractor based in Euclid, Ohio, but his work took him to the other side of the world for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.  

Infield represented USA Luge as its team physician. He was one of only six chiropractors invited and in attendance at the Winter Olympic Games.  

As a diplomate of the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP), he crossed paths with Dr. Bill Moreau, one of its board of directors, but also the former chief medical officer for the United States Olympic and Paralympics Committee. 

“He saw me helping out some colleagues and other professionals at some of the [ACBSP] seminars and asked me if would do a rotation at the Lake Placid Training Center,” Infield said. “I went up there and the athletes really liked me. A few weeks later, I got another call back and it just kind of snowballed from there.” 

Infield found his fit with the luge team and has been traveling internationally with them since 2018.  

“My skillset matches their problems, so they keep inviting me around,” Infield said. “Some of their upper neck complaints and their lower back complaints just seem to match really well with what I can do.” 

Infield worked the games for three weeks.  

“I had to be at the top of the hill for all runs, doing pretreatments and anything the coaches might need me to do, but without any major crashes it was a really laid-back experience,” he said. 

Though he wasn’t paid for his work overseas, Infield jumped at the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. In fact, he attributes his readiness to volunteer to his involvement in Greek life at CSU when he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.

“We did all kinds of things to give back to local charities and that sense of community really grew out of my experience at Cleveland State,” he said.
